Texas and Mid-Plains Drought

Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon predicted in 2014 that the Texas mega-drought could last until 2020. Based on tree-ring data of past droughts the forecast looks at how these droughts can last for a decade. Largely believed to be part of strong El Niņo and La Niņa episodes, the drought and wet patterns are based on the cooling and warming of Pacific Ocean waters. These patterns are difficult to predict in advance, but these weather patterns may also be based on other patterns in addition to Pacific patterns that may give these trends their decade-long life.
